The woman believed to have drowned Thursday in the Monongahela River
has been identified.
An autopsy is being done on Ida Stewart, 37, of Fairmont, to confirm
that she died from drowning Thursday afternoon while she and four
others swam in the river near Opekiska Lock and Dam, Monongalia County
Sheriffs Department Chief Deputy Rick Adkins said Friday.
At about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Stewart's friends called 911 to say they
had been swimming and she disappeared. Two hours later, rescuers
recovered her body from the river.
Adkins said police continue to investigate, as they do with any
unnatural death.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's department at
(304) 291-7260.
