Hermit (Herk) G. Floyd, of Callen Avenue, Morgantown, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at his residence. He was a native West Virginian, son of the late Savilla (Gibson) and Walter C. Floyd.

He was a 1940 graduate of Morgantown High School and attended West Virginia University. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in the European Theater of Operations during World War II and in Germany during the Korean War as a member of the 361st Engineering Battalion.

Herk began his 42 year career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the age of 18, serving as Lockmaster at the Morgantown Lock and Dam from 1951 until his retirement in 1982. His father, Walter, and his son, William, both retired from the Army Corps of Engineers after working at locks and dams on the Monongehela River.

Herk was proud of the fact that he was a direct descendent of William C. Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Herk took his heritage seriously and was engaged in many community organizations and activities. He and his wife, Ann (Arbogast) Floyd were among the founders of the PACE-Tech Center, he was a past president of the Board of Directors of Southern States, past president of the Cattlemans' Association, a District Officer of the Farm Bureau and served on the West Virginia University County Extension Committee. He and Ann and their son, William, were avid RV travelers and during his retirement he served as president of the Avon Travelers.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Phillips and husband Bradley of Morgantown and Carrie Ann Smith and husband, Robert of Palos Verdes Estates, California, a son, William Clinton Floyd at home, four grandchildren, Timothy Gibson Phillips of Florida, Christopher Floyd Phillips of Morgantown, Kylie Ann Floyd and Joessa Ann Smith of California. His brother-in-law, and wife, Warden and Virgie Arbogast also survive him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Anna Lee (Arbogast) Floyd, and a daughter, Susan Ann Floyd Freed.

Family and Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home from 3-8 p.m. on Monday, September 24, and from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25 with Dr. Ken. A. Ramsey officiating.

Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery. VFW Post 548 will conduct military graveside rites.
