MORGANTOWN -- Longview Power, developers of a 695-megawatt coal-fired power plant north of Morgantown, announced Aug. 30 a $5,000 pledge to the Mon River Revival to support the program’s efforts to remove and keep litter off the Monongahela River.

The funding will help build and maintain three kiosks that will offer the first riverside litter receptacles in the Morgantown area.

The kiosks also will serve as information resources, raising community awareness and involvement by educating the public on the local environment and wildlife, Monongahela River history, and announcements related to activities on the river.

“Longview’s support is integral to growing and sustaining the Mon River Revival,” said Tim Terman, founder of the initiative.

“The funding helps us continue to expand our efforts to clean the river and to raise awareness among the next generation of community leaders.”

The Mon River Revival was founded in 2006 and began as a youth summer program that responded to concerns over litter in the Monongahela River. The initiative aims to involve and educate youth, fostering an appreciation for the environment and building an anti-litter consciousness in the community.

In addition to Longview’s contribution, local youth organizations will help raise money to support the riverside kiosk project.

Construction and installation are expected to begin in mid-September.

“Tim took us on a kayak tour to witness the benefits of the Mon River Revival firsthand,” said Charlie Huguenard, Longview Power vice president and general manager.

“It’s clear his initiative has already helped to clean trash from the river and enhanced Morgantown's Wharf District. We’re truly pleased to help sustain a program that is so beneficial to our community and the environment.”
