MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Environmental concerns brought on by West
Virginia's booming natural gas industry will be discussed at a
conference in Morgantown next month.
The West Virginia Water Conference will be held Oct. 6 and 7 at the
Waterfront Place Hotel.
State officials say more than 500 wells have already been drilled in
West Virginia to tap into the Marcellus shale field. The field is a
rich natural gas reserve underlying New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and
West Virginia.
The process of extracting natural gas involves injecting vast amounts
of water to break the gas free. The industry is trying to figure out
ways to best handle the water that returns into the environment.
