SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. --  International Coal Group says a strong market for metallurgical coal has prompted it to resume construction on a new underground mine in Taylor County.

The company says it expects to start producing coal at the Tygart No. 1 mine by the middle of next year.

When fully operational, the mine is expected to employ 300 people and produce 3.5 million tons a year of coal for both the steel-making and electrical generating industries.

West Virginia-based ICG says it expects to spend $325 million to open the mine. Money for the project is expected to come from existing cash flow.

ICG operates 13 mines in Northern and Central Appalachian and in Central Illinois basin.
