DELLSLOW, W.Va. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it's
giving nearly $22,000 to a West Virginia conservation group to track
water quality.
The EPA says the grant also will help the Friends of Deckers Creek
provide education about acid mine drainage and other water pollutants.
The group says on its Web site that Deckers Creek has been damaged by
acid mine drainage, sewage and sediment, among other things. The creek
runs from Preston County into Monongalia County and empties into the
Monongahela River.
Acid mine drainage, Deckers Creek's biggest problem, is a major issue
for watersheds across West Virginia.
The group says it's aiming to make all of Deckers Creek fishable this
year and swimmable by 2015.
