Allegheny River Locks Shut Down Today

Service through the Allegheny River Lock and Dam 6 in Armstrong County will be closed at least through today so crews can fix a cracked hydraulic line -- a problem that could cause an oil leak if not repaired quickly, officials said.

Maintenance crews noticed the crack while finishing scheduled repairs on the lock and dam, located near Clinton, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District.

"If we don't fix it, the line could blow and we'd have an oil leak," District Navigation Chief Dave Sneberger said.

Crews hope to repair the problem this weekend, but the lock could be closed longer.

Because of repairs and budget reductions, several of the eight locks will offer limited service for boaters throughout September.
