Markland Locks' Main Gate Still Shut Down

NEAR WARSAW, Ky. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it will
assess the status of the Markland Locks on Monday.
The corps plans to bring in a crane to lift the broken gate out of the
river and load it onto a barge. The gate will then be inspected to
determine whether the gate is salvageable.
The process is expected to take a full day and is weather dependent.
The engineers need to inspect the gate to determine a course of action
on getting the main lock reopened. An auxiliary lock is allowing some
boat and barge traffic to go through, but delays sometimes surpass 10
hours.
The Markland Locks are located near Vevay, Ind., and Warsaw, Ky. The
main lock has been inoperable since the gate broke on Sept. 27.
