EPA Creates Tip Line for Oil, Gas Drilling Concerns

The Enviromental Protection Agency has announced the creation of a tip line to report non-emergency suspicious activity related to oil and gas drilling.

People who live near drilling sites "have been calling in to different places in the agency," said spokesman David Sternberg. "So we wanted to set up the tipline so people could call in one central place and make sure people's concerns are addressed."

Public concern about the environmental impacts of oil and natural gas drilling has increased in recent months, particularly regarding development of the Marcellus Shale formation.

The number for the toll-free tip line is 877-919-4372. Reports also may be sent by e-mail to eyesondrilling@ epa.gov. Tips may be provided anonymously.

Sternberg noted that the EPA does not regulate oil and gas drilling - that responsibility is left to states - but does regulate the disposal of waste products from drilling and its impact on air and water resources.

The EPA also wants to get a better understanding of what people are experiencing and observing as a result of drilling activities. The information collected may also be useful in investigating industry practices.

The EPA is asking those who call or send an e-mail message to report the location, time and date of any suspicious activity, as well as the materials, equipment and vehicles used.

In the event of an emergency, such as a spill or release of hazardous material, including oil, to the environment, citizens are advised to call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.
